LONDON, 11 November 2022 – DAZN, the leading global sports streaming service, is releasing the highly anticipated documentary film Maradona: The Fall on the platform, a DAZN Originals film directed by Emmy Award-winning director, Angus Macqueen. The documentary is available on DAZN in key markets including the UK, DACH, Spain, Italy and Japan from Friday 11th November.

The documentary film is an explosive look behind the scenes at one of the most controversial episodes in sports history. It explores the story behind Diego Maradona, football’s biggest global star, and how he was sensationally thrown out of the USA FIFA World Cup after failing a post-match drugs test, which sent shockwaves around the world.

Maradona: The Fall draws on candid interviews and has exclusive access to the characters at the very centre of the drama: from former FIFA General Secretary Sepp Blatter and Maradona’s team-mates, Gabriel Batistuta and Claudio Caniggia, to his management and medical team. This feature documentary explores the build-up and aftermath of one of the most notorious and shocking moments in sport: a moment where, to this day, Maradona’s inner circle insist he was betrayed.

Director Angus Macqueen said: “The image of Diego Maradona running like a maniac to the camera during the World Cup at USA94 is iconic: a flawed genius, a man purporting to be back to his best, but seemingly totally out of control, wracked by demons and high on drugs. A legend about to fall. Maradona: The Fall challenges the established narrative – as always with Maradona, what you think you see is not always the full picture.”

Producer Grant Best said: “Maradona: The Fall, a DAZN Originals production, is the tale of how the footballing legend Diego Armando Maradona came to play at the World Cup ‘94 for his beloved Argentina. Both FIFA and the host country USA hoped the greatest football player of his generation would play at their tournament and this incredible story is released on selected DAZN platforms around the world ahead of the 2022 World Cup.”

Maradona: The Fall is one of DAZN’s three World Cup commissions, along with Green Lions, the inspiring untold story of Cameroon’s Italia ‘90 FIFA World Cup heroes and The Phenomenon: The Rise, Fall and Redemption of Ronaldo, a film that examines Ronaldo’s meteoric rise, spectacular fall and, ultimately, redemption that culminated in him leading Brazil to a 2002 World Cup victory in Japan.
